Why Azam Khan gets High Court notice: Explained
What is the case?
The case is pertaining to holding two offices at the same time.
Azam is an MLA and Vice Chancellor of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, Rampur.
The court asked why Azam should not be disqualified as an MLA.
The Court served him a notice based on PIL and Azam has been given two weeks time to reply.
The petitioners alleged that despite being a Cabinet Minister, Azam was holding the post of Chancellor, which is an office of profit and hence against the law.
Petitions had also demanded immediate ouster of Azam Khan as a cabinet minister of the state and also sought an FIR against him.
Azam not new to controversies
The SP leader was in controversy over his remarks against BJP's PM candidate during LS polls. He called Modi, ‘big dog' in respond to Modi's puppy remarks over Godhra violence.
Azam landed in controversy over his statement in Sambhal rally. He reportedly appealed people to defeat fascist and vote to take revenge of murderers of Muzaffarnagar.
He then courted controversy by saying , ‘The perks of Kargil were conquered by Muslim soldiers and not by Hindus.'
On 7th April, during a rally in Masuri, UP, Azam allegedly said that Amit Shah has come to UP to create terror and that he is ‘Gunda no 1'.
On April, 3, Azam Khan made a scathing comment against Narendra Modi calling him an elder brother of a dog's pup. He said, ‘We don't want your sympathy, elder brother of a dog's son.'
It has been alleged that he put pressure on police that people from one community should not be arrested during Muzaffarnagar riots.
