Narendra Modi team: Who is MoS Sudarshan Bhagat?

New Delhi, May 27: We can now proudly call Narendra Modi our new Prime Minister and with him taking office efficiently on the very first day of PMO, his Council of Ministers too are gradually assuming offices.

Interestingly, the core Cabinet members in the PMO are well-known faces of the nation, but harping on youth and a new form of streamlined governance, there are many new faces in the Ministry of State.

Sudarshan Bhagat is the new social Justice and Empowerment Minister (independent charge).

Early years

Born on 20 Oct 1969 in Tangardih, Dist Gumla (Jharkhand), he completed his education at Kartik Oraon College,Gumla,University of Ranchi,Jharkhand. He is married to Smt Krishna Toppo and has 2 sons.

Political Career

Bhagat started his career as a Vidyarthi Parishad leader in undivided Bihar in the early 1990s. He had joined ABVP in student life as State Joint Secretary, Bihar, which was Affiliated to RSS, Vanvasi Kalyan Kendra and participated in several social activities. He joined politics actively in 1995

Now the social justice and empowerment minister, he had previously held the following profiles:

2000-2005:  Member, Jharkhand Legislative Assembly
2000-2003:  Minister of State, Human Resources, Government of Jharkhand
2003-2004:  Minister of State (Independent Charge), C.M. Secretariat; Government of Jharkhand
2004-2005:  Minister, Department of Welfare, Government of Jharkhand
2009:         Elected to 15th Lok Sabha
31 Aug. 2009:  Member, Standing Committee on Labour member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Tribal Affairs

He was elected from the Lohardanga constituency in the Lok Sabha elections held this time.


Reading historical and philosophical literature, playing football and traditional Sepak Takraw and Yoga. He is also into Indian music, travelling and visiting historical and archaeological sites.
