Swachch Bharat: Now find foreigners sweeping Varanasi streets
Imagine a strong force of 12 lakh foreigners, visiting the land of pilgrimages taking to the roads to clean the most popular city in the world that they like to visit time and again.
However, cleaning the city is a himalayan task indeed! the Supreme Court would agree which had rattled the Centre saying that cleaning Varanasi will take 200 years
According to official records, the residents of Varanasi dump 300 million litres a day or mld of waste into the Ganga. Interestingly, the three existing waste treatment plants only cater to about 110 mld.
This does not include the 800 tonnes of ashes per day at the two cremation ghats and the effluents from nearly 1,000 small scale units which directly find their way into the Ganga.
