When Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was in the United States of America, he had assured that action would be taken against the Lashkar-e-Tayiba. There was absolutely no enthusiasm in India to this statement as it is an open secret that Pakistan would never act against the Lashkar which today is its most prized asset.
The statement by former President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf is a clear indicator of how important the Lashkar is.
In an interview with a news channel, he said that Pakistan supported and trained groups like Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) in 1990s to carry out militancy in Kashmir. In 1990s the freedom struggle began in Kashmir...
At that time Lashkar-e-Toiba and 11 or 12 other organisations were formed. We supported them and trained them, Musharraf also said.
Lashkar's clout cannot be underestimated in Pakistan
The clout of the Lashkar is something that can not be underestimated in Pakistan. First and foremost the Lashkar operatives are considered as freedom fighters in Pakistan and not terrorists.
The Lashkar is the only outfit which has not once gone against the ISI. Moreover the ISI will go to any extent to safeguard the cadres of the Lashkar as they can be used for any battle which suits the establishment.
So strong is the bond between the Lashkar and the ISI, that there has not been a single defection or revolt till date. Those part of the Lashkar always remain in the outfit and there has not been a single incident of defection reported till date.
However, in the year 2006, some cadres of the Lashkar wanted to break away and fight alongside the Taliban in Afghanistan. The ISI was not in favour of this and at first tried to coax the cadres against this.
However, with the revolt within growing stronger, the ISI realized that the situation could well go out of control and there was a need for a massive attack to keep the Lashkar united.
This is one of the reasons why the 26/11 attack was planned and the Lashkar cadres were told that they would be the ones executing the same. This gave the Lashkar cadres a sense of purpose and the revolt which was threatening to blow out of proportion was brought under control.
This goes on to show how much the Lashkar matters to the ISI and why no President or Prime Minister can never act against it.
Officials in India say that any proposed action against the Lashkar can prove costly for the leadership or the government.
Lashkar holds the key in Kashmir
In Kashmir one has witnessed several groups come and go. Pakistan has nurtured 12 outfits to fight in Kashmir. However barring the Lashkar none of the other outfits have lasted. Either they have been beaten down or shunted out for falling out of favour with the ISI.
Today the ISI trusts only the Lashkar to fight its battle in Kashmir. Moreover when the Pakistan army launched Zarb-e-Arb an operation to hunt down terrorists along the Afghanistan border, it was the Lashkar that was roped in to battle alongside the Pakistan army.
These are just a few factors which suggest how strong the Lashkar is and why no Pakistan government will ever act against it.
