Manohar Parrikar in Modi's team: Know why he fits in Defence Minister shoes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is known for taking decisions in the larger interest of the country and there are so many recent examples which prove that. Though, Modi has scored high on diplomacy front but he has some failures too. Like in the case of Pakistan and China, things are not moving as swiftly as it may have gauged by the incumbent Government.

So, it is being felt that there should be a full time Defence Minister. Speculation is  rife that Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar may be made new Defence Minister. Parrikar on Wednesday met BJP president Amit Shah amid reports that he may be inducted into the Union Cabinet.

There have been reports that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will expand his Cabinet before the winter session of Parliament. When asked about the new development that he may be inducted into the Cabinet, he said, "I can comment on it only after meeting the Prime Minister. Let the Prime Minister who has invited me comment."

Full time Defence Minister needed to tackle sting from China, Pakistan

Modi had tried to improve the relations between two countries and with that motive he had invited Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to his swearing in ceremony. But after that relation got embittered when Pakistan talked with Kashmiri separatists despite India's warning. Ceasefire violations are continued at the line of control. Both the countries are blaming each other for relation hitting the nadir.

More or less same is the situation with China. Though when Chinese premier Xi Jinping had visited India, both the countries had pledged to do away with all the major irritants. But things have not changed much on the front. As both are the Asia's growing superpower so this ego tussle is bound to happen. In the backdrop of this a full time Defence Minister is needed who can make proper strategy to deal with these issue.

Arun Jaitley is burdened with work

As Union Minister is not keeping well, Prime Minister Modi himself has planned to relieve him with Defence portfolio.

At present Jaitly looks after Finance Ministry and has additional charge of defence Ministry. Soon jaitley will have to focus on the Union Budget 2015-16, so it will be tough to manage both the important portfolio.

So sources say that Government has decided to hand over this Defence Ministry to Parrikar. Though, initially he was averse to take up the post but now sources say he has accepted after Narendra Modi himself implored him.

Other qualities why Goa CM has been handpicked by Modi for the post

  • He has been one of the most successful Chief Minister of the BJP and that also in the State where Christians are in majority
  • Then secondly he is favourite of Modi because of his administrative skill and clean image.
  • Reports say that he is also in the good book of the RSS which generally calls the shot in the BJP.
  • Moreover, he is energetic, efficient IIT graduate who can take assertive and tough decisions in critical moment
