As the people of Uttar Pradesh are grappling not only with power crisis in the scorching summer, but also with the crimes against women, the least that they could have expected from their state chief minister Akhilesh Yadav was unexpected and shocking comments on recent rape cases.
Although, his government has sent reports to the Home Ministry and has come d own heavily upon the police to arrest all accused in Badaun gangrape cqase of two cousin sisters, but people, expect him to be sensitive enough to speak in an acceptable manner to media.
On Friday, on being asked what was his view on the law and order situation in UP in the wake of Badaun and Azamgarh rape cases, Akhilesh Yadav retorted, "I hope you have not faced any danger!" When the journalist said, "No", the angry Chief Minister said, "Thank you. You should propagate this."
He also said "a new police control room has come up in Kanpur and added asserted that no other state government has such a set-up".
Last month, SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav had raked a huge controversy on rape cases when he publicly said, "Ladke, ladke hain, galti ho jati hai (Boys are boys , they make such mistakes). That doesn't mean that you award them capital punishment."
He had also claimed "boys and girls fall in love but due to differences they fall apart later on. When their friendship ends, the girl complains she has been raped."
But defiant Mulayam remained adamant on his comments and defended himself saying that the SP had done tremendous work for the women in the state.
Such an unfortunate and shameful behaviour by the ruling- SP government, at the time when 3 rape cases have taken place in last 24 hours, is a blot on its governance, a dent that will never go and people of UP will remember their words.
At least people do not expect such behaviour from young chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, who was seen as a ray of hope and change, when he became the CM of Uttar Pradesh in 2011. He was expected to come beyond from the conservative thoughts of his father and the party chief Nataji.
But, he failed to show his abilities as a strong and decisive leader not only when innocent girls were being raped in his state, but many times on different issues from Muzaffarnagar communal riots to Durga Shakti Nagpal case.
Akhilesh Yadav's brash behaviour with media can be seen as a result of his party's recent debacle in the Lok Saba election results, where it just managed to get 5 seats, that too, were occupied by his clan.
Here are some Twitter reactions on Akhilesh Yadav's shocking reaction:
