Year-2015 is about to end now. We achieved many milestones in terms of science and technology, defence and other development in the country and at the same time we also lost many important personalities including celebrities, politicians, writers in the year. As a new year beckons, here is the list of 10 important luminaries we lost in 2015.

Subhash Ghising, the President of Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF)

Founder of Gorkha National Liberation Front Ghising died in Delhi's hospital on January 30.

An important political figure in the history of West Bengal politics, he played pivotal role in bringing 'Gorkhaland issue' to forefront.

A Gorkha Rifles soldier and later a teacher, he was the man behind many bloodbaths between 1986 and 1988.

During 1980s, he was like a big challenger to the Left Front Government's might in the State.

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam died

Dr Abdul Kalam Kalam famously called People's President passed away on July 27 while delivering a lecture at IIM in Shilong.

Born and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Kalam was leading scientist of the country.

He was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007.

India’s First Lady Suvra Mukherjee died

President Pranab Mukherjee's wife, Suvra Mukherjee passed away on August 18 in Delhi.

Suvra, an accomplished Rabindra Sangeet singer, was 74

She was suffering with respiratory problem and admitted in Delhi's Army Hospital where she took her last breath.

Music Composer Aadesh Shrivastava died

Battling with relapsed cancer, singer and music composer Aadesh Shrivastava passed away on September 5 at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital in Mumbai

49-year old composer was diagnosed with cancer and admitted in Mumbai's hospital

He composed many hits song in 1990s including 'Haatho mein aa gaya jo' from movie  Aao Pyar Karein (1994).

Jagmohan Dalmiya passed away

BCCI president Dalmia died in on September 21 following a massive cardiac arrest.

75-year-old Dalmiya was admitted to the Kolkata's B M Birla Hospital after he complained of uneasiness.

He was BCCI president from 2001 to 2005

Veteran music director Ravindra Jain passed away

71-year-old renowned Bollywood music director Ravindra Jain passed away on Oct 9 in Mumbai.

Doctor said that revered lyricist died due to multiple organ failure.

He had been suffering from an urinary infection, causing problem in his kidney

Overcoming his blindness, he composed music for many hit films.

The popular serial that he composed music for was Ramanand Sagar's epic "Ramayan". 


Tamil actress Manorama died

Legendary Tamil actress, Manorama passed away on October 10

Fondly called 'Aachi', 78-year old actress was Padma Shri awardee. A versatile actress, Manorama had acted in over 1,200 Tamil films.

She had worked with all big stars of her time including MG Ramachandran and NT Rama Rao

Children's book writer Kamala Laxman died

90-year old widow of legendary cartoonist R.K. Laxman passed away on November 13.

She was credited with many children's books in the 1970s.

Some notable books are The Thama Stories and her book Raman of Tenali & Other Stories, Thama and His Missing Mother.

Veteran actor Saeed Jaffrey passed away

Veteran actor Saeed Jaffrey passed away on November 16.

Indian-British actor Jaffrey, who had worked in many famous Hindi films was 86 years old

Some of the noted Hindi movies in which he worked are Dil, Kishan Kanhaiya, Ghar Ho Toh Aisa, Raja Ki Aayegi Baarat, Deewana Mastana.

VHP leader Ashok Singhal died

VHP leader who played a leading role in the Ram Janambhoomi movement passed away on November 17.

Ardent Hindutva supporter, 89-year-old Singhal died at a Gurgaon hospital following cardio-vascular failure and septicaemia.

A bachelor and an RSS pracharak all his life, Singhal, adopted an aggressive style in the build up to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in nineties.

Praful Bidwai, a senior journalist passed away

Well-known journalist Bidwai died on June 24 due to a cardiac arrest.

One of South Asia's most widely published columnists, Bidwai was a social science researcher and an activist on issues of human rights, environment, global justice and peace.

He used to write in various publications such as The Times of India, Frontline, rediff.com, and The Kashmir Times.

MM Kalburgi shot dead

Kannada writer and prominent thinker Prof. M M Kalburgi was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on August 31.

Assailants fired at him while he was speaking on his mobile phone at his residence in Dharwad, Karnataka.

Born in Bijapur in the year 1938, he was former vice chancellor of the Kannada University

Vinod Mehta died

73-year-old versatile writer Vinod Mehta died on March 8 at AIIMS.

'Lucknow Boy' Vinod Mehta left his indelible imprint as feisty editor of several successful publications in a career spanning over four decades

He had also written well-acclaimed biographies of film actress Meena Kumari and Congress leader and Indira Gandhi's son Sanjay Gandhi.


Govind Pansare passed away

Veteran CPI leader Pansare who was at the forefront of a campaign against road toll tax died on February 20 in a Mumbai hospital.

82 year old Pansare and his wife were shot at by some unknown assailants in front of their house on February 16.

He was admitted to the Breach Candy hospital, where he succumbed during treatment.

Veteran Bollywood actress Sadhana died

Bollywood diva Sadhna Shivdasani who was popular for her trademark look called 'the Sadhana fringe' passed away on Friday, Dec 25..

The 74-year-old actress was not keeping well for quite sometime and breathed her last at Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai.

She is best remembered for featuring in hit films like Mere Mehboob, Hum Dono, Asli-Naqli, Arzoo, Mera Saaya.
