Dr Abdul Kalam was a proud man when the Chandrayaan, India's first moon mission was launched. A patriot to the core, it was Dr Kalam's idea to plant the tri-colour on the moon.
At the launch, Dr Kalam was like a child, clapping his hands and punching his fist. He watched the developments keenly and as he came out to speak to the media, he was simply too overwhelmed and said, " yes we have done it." [APJ Abdul Kalam: Profile]

Chandrayaan had flown 3,86,000 km from the earth and as Dr Kalam sat down and watched at the ISRO Telemetry,Tracking and Command Network at Peenya, Bangalore in November 2008, all of us knew that the achievement was major.
Kalam said place the Tricolour on the moon:

At ISRO all of us were told that it was Dr Kalam's idea to plant the Indian Flag on the moon. India has the flag on Mount Everest and now it is time to place it on the moon.
