DA case stings Jayalalithaa: From film actress to CM, know her rollercoaster journey

AIADMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has reportedly been convicted in 18-year-old Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case, which most likely will jeopardize her political career. The case pertains to Jaya's first tenure as Tamil Nadu CM between 1991 and 1996, when she allegedly accumulated assets of this worth, disproportionate to her known sources of income. Earlier in 1996 also, she had to spent a few weeks in jail in the similar case of corruption.

Though, every time she held DMK and their vendetta politics responsible for her cup of woes, but then court judgment always be considered as the supreme. In a backdrop of recent Supreme Court's judgment where it had ruled that lawmakers sentenced to more than two years stand disqualified, it is like the end of the road for this film star turned politician. Experts believe that most likely she will be disqualified as an MLA for 6 years.

Except Jayalalithaa, three other politicians were also recently disqualified after their conviction in various corruption cases. Rajya Sabha member from Congress, Rashid Masood was the first member of Parliament who was disqualified after found guilty in corruption case. Then after RJD chief and former chief Minister of Bihar Lalu Prasad Yadav along with JD(U)'s Jagadish Sharma were disqualified after their conviction in fodder scam.

Some interesting facts about Jayalalithaa

Three time Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa is considered a political giant today not only in Tamil Nadu politics but on national level also. She is someone who believes in guessing game and never opens her cards easily.

She has a very modest beginning, having gone trough very tough time after her father and elder brother both died when Jayalalithaa was just two.

As Jayalalithaa's mother Sandhya was also an actress, so acting was in her genes. Her mother always used to convince her to act in films , though young girl wanted to be a lawer.

But destiny had something else in her mind and she joined film industry. She did first film Chinnada Gombe(in Kannada) at the age of 15. The film proved a milestone in her career as it did great business and proved super hit. Then subsequently she acted in Tamil movie Vennira Aadai (1965),and Tamil cinema Vennira Aadai (1965).

She also acted in few Bollywood films, the most remembered among them is movie "Izzat" opposite Dhamendra.It is being said that when heroine had this sari-clad and demure type image, she had this guts to appear in skirts.

M. G. Ramachandran is known as her celluloid mentor and together they did 28 films including Kavalkaran, Adimai Pen, Engal Thangam, Kudiyiruntha Koil, Ragasiya Police 115. Her last film was Nadhiyai Thedi Vandha Kadal which came in 1980

Her political career started In 1982, when she joined Ramachandran found AIADMK. Then, in 1983, she became propaganda secretary for the party and soon after much chagrin of many seasoned partymen nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

In 1989, she was elected to the Tamil Nadu Assembly after AIADMK won 27 seats. Jayalalithaa became first woman to be elected Leader of the Opposition. Only two years after in 1991, Jayalalithaa became Chief Minister for the first time in coalition Government.

After AIADMK defeat in 1996 election, the DMK came to power. According to reports, after DMK Government confiscated all her jewelry pertaining to DA case in 1997, Jayalalithaa swore that she will would not wear jewelry again.

She broke that promise in 2011 after her party's thumping victory. As quoted by NDTV, 'for 14 years a woman known to have fondly owned a gold waist belt studded with diamonds, more than 10,000 saris and 750 pairs of shoes, among many other things, wore not a piece of jewelry".

Very few know that the Tamil Nadu CM can speaks English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi fluently.
