Bangalore, Aug 12: While we prepare ourselves for the Independence Day celebrations, coming 15th August, it would be fair to look back into the events of the past one year that have rattled our lives and souls. Be it political, natural or cultural, these events have been a window for us in many aspects, shaping the image of the country among the Indians and the world. OneIndia lists a few of them that have become a part of our lives forever.

Ajmal Kasab's Hanging (November 2012): Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist to have been caught alive in the 26.11 Bombay terror attack, was hung on Nov 21. He was hannged in secrecy at Pune's Yerwada jail. He pleaded for mercy from President Pranab Mukherjee, which got rejected and he was executed, thus putting an end to the chapter.

Delhi Gang Rape (December 2012): India saw yet another example of extreme endurance and perseverence on the part of the victim who fought her tormentors back, only to be raped brutally. Her case rattled the rape laws in the Supreme court, re-contouring the country's laws against rape. The country united for her cause and the rapists were brought to justice.

Uttarakhand tragedy (June 2013): As debate on the cause of a natural calamity of this order is still on, we think of the families that lost their loved ones under the debris here. Another story of extreme courage, and endurance, the country saw the defence forces at their best, justifying their oath of serving the people. The people, lost and trapped in the valleys here have left behind a saga of death, destruction and trauma that is not to be forgotten.

Mid-day meal tragedy (July 2013): Masks off, the Indian government stands exposed with the death of 23 children in Bihar's Chhapra after eating the mid-day meal. Once the dream project of the Congress, it left the Centre shaken, looking for another dream project (in Food Bill) to save its position.

Formation of Telangana (July 2013): India gets its 29th state with the formation of Telangana, dividing the parliament in favour and against it. Moreover, this intensified the demand for Bodoland, Gorkhaland, Vidarbha, etc.

Pakistan cease-fire violation (August 2013): Truce and treaty failed both the governments of India and Pakistan with the latter trespassing in the Indian territory in the darkness of the night and killing five. While this is not the lone case in the past few months, the upcoming treaty between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart-Nawaz Sharif over cease fire regulations comes under the scanner.
