Dehradun, March 25: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded India's first woman Director Genral of Police (DGP), Kanchan Choudhary Bhattacharya from Haridwar constituency in Uttarakhand. Her name was announced in party's sixth list of candidates.

Kanchan Choudhary Bhattacharya's real life story was depicted in 1980s popular TV serial "Udaan", that was directed and played by her younger sister Kavita Choudhary.

According to Business Standard report, Bhattacharya, an IPS officer of the 1973 batch, is now busy in her Lok Sabha election campaign in Haridwar, her maternal grandparents' hometown.

In February this year, she approached AAP as a volunteer.

Bhattacharya is short of funds and finances for polls.

She was appointed as DGP in Uttrakhand and retired from her services on October 31, 2007.

Kanchan, who hails from Amritsar, is now ready to fight elections from BJP's bastion, Haridwar. The BJP has won four out of six civic body polls in Haridwar and lost to SP and Congress in other two times.

Bhattacharya, who is "short of funds and finances", has said that issues like employment, women empowerment, a cleaner Ganga, disaster preparedness and the environment will be her poll agenda.

Kanchan is married to Dev Bhattacharya and aims to debunk the myth that the AAP is an anti-industry.

On being asked about India's first IPS woman officer Kiran Bedi, who was her senior, Kanchan said, "To each, his own. She is a fine woman with a lot of guts and I admire her. She must have her own reasons for doing what she did. We have to each walk our own trail, there is no point dwelling on these things."

With an aim to change the system and weed out corruption, Bhattacharya wants to raise the common man's voice.
