135 MLAs of AIADMK have backed O. Panneerselvam to take over as Chief Minister, according to sources. The MLAs have signed a declaration to this effect. The same is expected to be submitted to the in-charge, Governor of Tamil Nadu.
With their leader still in critical condition, the AIADMK is looking for an interim successor. Jayalalithaa's political man Friday O Paneerselvam seems to be the obvious choice. O Paneerselvam is already discharging his duties as ad-hoc Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The party had called for a meeting with its members early on Monday morning. Sources revealed that the members were asked to give an undertaking to stand by any decision taken by the party during this trying time. The AIADMK members have assured its leaders to sail through together.
Sources also reveal that Jayalalithaa's close aide, Sasikala Natarajan is likely to be made the General Secretary of the party. Party cadres have been asked to be present at the legislative party meet at 7 PM on Monday. Sources reveal that the party is likely to submit a petition to the Governor on its decision.
