Chennai TCS techie killed: Women IT professionals scared

Chennai, Feb 26: Women IT professionals in Chennai are scared to work at night and the latest incident in the city, murder of a young TCS techie, increased the panic among women.

One software engineer, on the condition of anonymity, was quoted as saying, "Our company provides cab facility after 8 pm. If something happens like this, we all get an alert email from HR that women should be careful and should not go in night. But during deadlines there is no other go for us except working for long hours and go in midnight."

Another woman employee said, "We are staying nearby the company in a residential area. For this small distance, we cannot ask for a cab and we go by two wheeler alone. But the area is dark which creates fear. Without street lights, this fear has increased after the murder."

An organisation called Save Tamils Movement including IT employees held a protest march near TCS campus at at SIPCOT gate of Siruseri on Monday, Feb 24. At least 500 IT professionals participated in the protest march demanding quick police action in the murder case and security for women.

Crime Branch-CID (CB-CID) Tamil Nadu Police on Tuesday arrested two men in connection with the case. It has been reported that the two accused allegedly had raped and killed 24-year-old Uma Maheshwari, an employee of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

The victim went missing on Feb 13 and her decomposed body was found ten days after on Feb 23 near her office campus at the SIPCOT IT Park in Siruseri.
