Chennai, Nov 1: Fishermen in Tamil Nadu decided to go on a strike demanding the release of five of their colleagues who were recently handed over death sentence by the high court in Colombo.

According to a Hindu report, leaders of 11 fishermen's associations met here and vowed not to join work till the Sri Lankan authorities reversed their decision. It was also learned that the fishermen leaders would observe a fast at Thangachimadam on Saturday to pressurise the Centre to take immediate steps to get the five fishermen released. Sivaganga Bishop J Susai Manickam would lead the fast, a dioceses release said, according to the Hindu report.

Fishermen leaders of 13 coastal districts would also meet on November 7 to chalk out a plan to conduct a demonstration at the parliament if the central government did not take concrete steps on the matter.

Supporters of the Puthiya Tamizhagam (PT) and Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK) were arrested on Friday after they began protesting condemning the death sentence. Some NTK supporters even disrupted the railway services at Tiruchi after being arrested by the police. Life in Rameswaram was hit by the protests and normalcy returned there on Friday.
