Supreme Court
Chennai, Jan 6: After 2009, the 1,000 year old Nataraja temple in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, witnessed yet another landmark judgement by the Supreme Court today. The latter ruled that the famous temple will be managed by the priests and not the state government.

In 2009, the Madras High Court had transeferred the administration of the temple to the M Karunanidhi-led government, suspecting mismanagement of finances.

The decision, however, was challenged by the priests (belonging to the Dikshithar sect) and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy. Further earlier in 1987, the state government had appointed an official to manage the finances, properties and the endowments of the temple.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is spread over an area of 40 acres.
