Throwing a surprise to the tech world Google has restructured the company forming a parent company named Alphabet Inc. [Who is Sundar Pichai, the new Google CEO?: Know all about him]
Pichai will administrate the company under that parent term, which will still be called Google and will continue to include some of Google's best-known products, including its search engine, ads, maps, apps, YouTube and Android system.
The announcement was made by Google chief executive Larry Page. Larry will be holding the position of CEO with Sergei Brin as President. Sundar Pichai is the current senior vice president of products.
Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies, says the Google blog.
This newer Google is a bit slimmed down, with the companies that are pretty far afield of their main Internet products contained in Alphabet instead.
"Fundamentally, we believe this allows us more management scale, as we can run things independently that aren't very related. Alphabet is about businesses prospering through strong leaders and independence," says Larry in the blog.
Larry hopes that the new structure will allow them to keep tremendous focus on the extraordinary opportunities they have inside of Google.
"A key part of this is Sundar Pichai. Sergey and I have been super excited about his progress and dedication to the company. He has really stepped up since October of last year, when he took on product and engineering responsibility for our Internet businesses And it is clear to us and our board that it is time for Sundar to be CEO of Google. I feel very fortunate to have someone as talented as he is to run the slightly slimmed down Google and this frees up time for me to continue to scale our aspiration," states Larry.
A native of Chennai Pichai did his schooling from Jawahar Vidyalaya and VanaVani.
He holds a bachelor degree in Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur in Metallurgical Engineering.
Pichai also holds an MS from Stanford University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
