MP jail break: 6 officials suspended; insider behind incident?

Bhopal, Oct 1: State authorities were thoroughly probing the jail break by alleged Students Islamic Movement of India activists (SIMI) activists from the district jail at Khandwa district on Tuesday.

Six jail officials including the Deputy Jail Superintendent Sunil Kumar were suspended in the wake of the incident. Jail authorities said the prisoners broke the wall of the toilet and fled. Earlier, top police and intelligence officials visited the jail for inspection.

Sources in the state home department suspected role of insiders in the jail break. The home ministry sought a detailed report on the incident and the state home department is likely to send it within the next three days.

Of the seven prisoners who fled the jail, one Abid Mirza was later caught and brought back. He was booked for planting a bomb in a local hospital.

The other six are Amjad, Aslam, Zakir, Mehboobm, Ejazuddin and Abu Faizal. They were charged of assaulting a policeman in the state. The police tried to establish a link between them and a radical SIMI activist but the case did not appear strong. But now, after the six having fled the jail, the police believe they have a stronger case against them.
