Saradha scam: ED to issue fresh summons to Nalini Chidambaram

Bengaluru, Sept 17: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is preparing fresh summons to be issued to Nalini Chidambaram, wife of former union minister, P Chidambaram in connection with the Saradha scam.

A fresh summons is being issued after the ED sought legal opinion which cleared the action.

Nalini Chidambaram to be issued summons

After the ED had issued summons, Nalini raised the contention that the action was wrong in law. She had stated that the summons had been issued under the Provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure while the case was being investigated under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

The ED, however, states that she is not being questioned as an accused in the case. The ED had learnt that the main accused, Sudipta Sen had invested in some media publications and he had done so under pressure from politicians and their kin. The ED is seeking to find out if Nalini was aware of this.

After legal opinion was sought the ED will now issue fresh summons under Section 50 of the PMLA. Under this section the ED can examine a witness under oath. The ED can also ask the person to submit documents and evidence under this section.
