Legendary singer Manna Dey passes away in Bangalore hospital

Bangalore, Oct 24: Legendary singer Manna Dey passed away in a Bangalore hospital early on Thursday. He was 94.

Born in Kolkata (then Calcutta) in 1919, Manna Dey was suffering from chest and kidney infections and was undergoing treatment since June this year. His actual name was Prabodh Chandra Dey.

Manna Dey, known for his playback singing, has sung over 3,500 songs in several languages. He has won several awards in his life time, including the coveted Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

Manna Dey's wife Sulochona Kumaran passed away last year. The Deys are survived by their two daughters.

Information and Broacdasting Minister Manish Tewari expressed his condolences.

Noted actor-director Aparna Sen expressed her grief over Dey's death. She said it was a regret in her life that she did not meet the legendary singer much. She said it was an irreparable loss for the younger generations.

Another legendary Bengali singer Arati Mukherjee said it was a loss that could be never compensated.

Dey's last rites will be performed here on Thursday.
