Chikmagalur: Police lathicharge fearing communal clash, many injured

Chikmagalur (Karnataka), Dec 29: Police intervened after tension gripped MG Road and Hanumanthappa Road here on Friday where members from different communities had assembled in large numbers. The situation turned intense in the communally sensitive town after a severed head of an animal carcass was spotted near a religious place, paving way to protests.

District officials rushed to the spot to pacify the protesters and assured action against those who had committed the act. However, people began to gather near the office of the deputy commissioner and soon there was a big assembly at the MG Road. People from other communities also arrived there, causing more worry for the authorities.

It was then when police personnel were rushed to the spot and they began to lathicharge to disperse the people, fearing a communal clash. Many people were injured in the police action. Authorities later said that the situation was under control. A peace committee meeting was held on Friday evening to improve the situation in the town.
