As the two accompanying constables went after the culprits, Jagadish bled to death while he was being taken to a hospital at Nelamangala, about 30 km north of this city.

"A case has been registered against the thieves - Madhu and Harish Babu, who have a history of burglaries and petty crimes and were out on bail," Mr Prakash said, adding a massive hunt has been launched to nab the duo, who are said to be father and son.

He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 30 lakh to the bereaved family of Jagadish and additional Rs 20 lakh as group compensation as he died while on duty.

"We will also compensate Jagadish's family with the full salary he would have drawn till retirement and recommend him for a gallantry medal," Mr Prakash added.
