Bangalore to see protest rally against Jadavpur brutality on Sept 21

Bangalore, Sept 19: A rally will be organised at Town Hall near KR Market here on Sunday morning to protest the brutal police attack on students in Jadavpur Univeristy in Kolkata in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The police personnel along with goons allegedly backed by ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) attacked the students who were conducting a peaceful sit-in demonstration against the vice-chancellor of the prestigious institute, Abhijeet Chakraborty, seeking justice for a student who was allegedly molested in the campus last month. The lights were reportedly switched off by the university authorities when the attack took place. Thirty students were injured in the lathicharge and physical assault with two bearing serious injury. Even girl students were allegedly molested during the ruckus.

The incident was condemned from various quarters. City Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purakayastha was criticised for backing the police action, which he said was sympathetic towards the students, protest rallies were brought out by the students demanding the immediate resignation of the VC.

Meanwhile, former students of Jadavpur University in IIT Madras also expressed solidarity for the injured students.
