Bangalore: Private taxi, truck owners call strike to protest toll hike
Bangalore, May 9: Private taxi and truck owners went to a strike in the Silicon Hub of India on Friday to protest the steep hike in the toll fares on the Kempegowda International Airport expressway. The taxi and truck owners have demanded an immediate rollback on the hike which was implemented last week.
The protesters raised slogans near the toll plaza and sought action from the state government. Chairman of the toll committee of the All India Motor Transport Congress GR Shanmugappa demanded alternative service roads for movement. Shanmugappa had met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday morning on the issue and the latter reportedly assured him about a rollback.
A return trip on the airport expressway was hiked by Rs 85, causing the protest
Vehicles making a return trip will have to shell out Rs 115 instead of Rs 30 for using the expressway. The hike has annoyed both transporters and commuters. However, the protest against the hike near the toll plaza didn't last long in the face of heavy police deployment.
Political parties like the JD(U), BJP and JD(S) have protested against the toll hike.
