First day no show at most ATMs across the country. Banks had sent out a message stating that the ATMs would be functional from Friday onwards. However that was not to be. Several ATMs were closed or not dispensing cash as a result of which several people were put to great hardship.
"The bank sent us an SMS that atms will be functional starting today but they are still out of service. It is definitely a lot of inconvenience to the common man", said Sunil Kumar a senior citizen who has paid a visit to an ATM thrice since morning.
"The bank staff tell us that the new notes are smaller in size especially the Rs 500 note and they need to replace the cash dispensing slot in ATM machines. We are being told it will take at least another day before it is fixed", said Vanaja who waited for ATMs to open. She however ended up queueing up outside a bank instead to exchange old high value notes.
The scenario was similar in most ATMs across the country. People were seen making a beeline outside the ATMs. Most of the ATMs were out of service while some did not even open shutters. The cash deposit machines were functional and accepted cash deposit, but cash was not being dispensed.
