Jayalalithaa isn't the first heavyweight woman who faced Judge D'Cunha

Bangalore, Sept 28: John Michael D'Cunha, the special court judge who convicted heavyweight politician J Jayalalithaa on Saturday and sent her behind bars for four years besides slapping a fine of Rs 100 crore, isn't dealing with giants for the first time.

The man from Mangalore had dealt with a case against Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati in Hubli in Karnataka a decade ago.

Bharti was accused of hoisting the Tricolour at Idgah Maidan in Hubli in 1994 and in 2004, a revision petition was filed before D'Cunha seeking a stay on the proceedings that were pending before the Second Judicial Magistrate First Class Court (JMFC). D'Cunha, who was the First Additional District and Sessions Judge then, refused to intervene which led the Second JMFC Court to withdraw the case [Read].

The Hubli Bar Association congratulated D'Cunha over his verdict against Jayalalithaa while his classmate SK Ullal and Advocat Amrit Kini were elated, a Hindu report said.

An alumnus of Sri Dharmasthala Manjunateshwara Law College, Mangalore, D'Cunha started practising independently after passing out in 1984. In 1995, he joined Kini, MP Nornoha and SK Ullal to form Manu Advocates firm. In 2002, he was selected as the district judge and served in Dharwad, Bellary and Bangalore.
