Now, another diamond trader from the same state organised a mass wedding ceremony for 111 women and gave each one gifts worth lakhs of rupees. The wedding ceremony took place in Surat on Sunday.
The trader, Mahesh Savani, said the brides belonged to poor families and saw him as their foster father. Savani, 44, said he had gifted each one with gold and other items worth Rs 4.5 lakh besides paying for the grand ceremony.
Savani told AFP news agency that the material gifts were not that big for him and the more important matter was that he gave his name to the women and would carry out his responsibility as their father for days to come.
Savani has so far organised weddings of 251 women and he started it in 2008 when one of employees died just 12 days ahead of his daughters' marriage.
