Ahmedabad, Jun 10: Raking up the murder of Amrut Prajapati, a former aide-turned-baiter of self-styled godman Asaram by unidentified persons, the opposition Congress on Tuesday alleged that the law and order situation in BJP-ruled Gujarat has completely deteriorated.

"Murder of Amrut Prajapati shows that law and order situation has completely deteriorated in Gujarat. Prajapati was a key witness in Asaram case. It is very sad that he was shot dead in a full public view and police failed to protect such witnesses.

"Many traders and merchants were also killed in other parts of state recently. We demand proper inquiry into these cases," the Leader of Opposition in state Legislative Assembly Shankarsinh Vaghela said in a statement.

Prajapati (55), who had been battling for life ever since he was attacked by two unidentified assailants in Rajkot on May 23, passed away at his house in Odhav area this morning.

Prajapati was a qualified ayurveda practitioner and worked as the personal doctor to Asaram for almost 12 years during late 90s. Around 15 years ago, Prajapati left the Motera-based Asaram ashram owing to differences with the godman.

Later, he levelled serious allegations against Asaram after the deaths of two teenage boys living in the ashram. In his statement, Vaghela also raised other issues like scarcity of water in some parts of the state and asked the state government to take immediate steps to provide water to people in parched areas. He also alleged mismanagement in distribution of water in the scarcity-hit areas.

"Instead of just claiming that Gujarat is now free from tanker-based water supply, the administration should start the tanker service in scarcity hit areas. Even today, women in Saurashtra and north Gujarat have to walk 10 to 12 kms to fetch water. Government have not done anything concrete to resolve that problem," Vaghela said.
