Juvenile verdict today
New Delhi, Aug 31: The much-awaited 16th December juvenile verdict is to be given on Saturday. Awaited because, the verdict might be a significant move in deciding the crime of a juvenile in such cases in the future.

Moreover, the age old laws that the country has been following will see a change and a reformation for good, if the verdict does justice to heidousness of the crime.

Apart from that, there are lives depending on the verdict. The victim's mother who is willing to face the trial wants justice for her daughter. "He was the youngest of the lot, yet the most dangerous. Punishment should be decided by the type and the severity of the crime and not a person's age," said the mother.

All six involved in the gang rape of a 23-year old physiotherapy intern had been arrested. While one had committed suicide in jail, two are being tried under a fast-track court.

However, the case of the juvenile was undecided as he was just 17 at the time of the crime. The charges against him included murder and rape, subjecting him to a maximum sentence of three years at a reform center.

Supreme Court's stand

The inquiry against the defendant, who is now 18, was already done on August 5. However, the ruling deferred because of a case filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy seeking reformation in the legal definition of the term 'juvenile'.

The Apex Court has given the juvenile court a free hand to decide the fate of the defendant. The defendant had also robbed a carpenter who boarded the same bus on that night and had assaulted the student and her boyfriend after that.
