IIT professor suspended for vulgarism
Guwahati, Aug 31: An IIT-Guwahati (IIT-G) professor was suspended on Thursday for harassing a girl student by sending her vulgar text messages. Lingaraj Sahoo, the professor in the biotechnology department, was issued the suspension order by the institute authorities following strong protests by the students since Wednesday.

IIT-G authorities said the suspension order was issued to Sahoo after the IIT's Working Women Committee sought a disciplinary action against the prfessor. It was said that the girl, along with her father, had lodged a complaint last month at the office of IIT-G director Gautam Barua. The matter was then referred to the women panel.

The students lodgd an FIR against Sahoo at Amingaon police outpost on August 2 and the latter was arrested on August 2, though he got bail later. Police said a chargesheet will be fild against the accused professor within next few days.

The girl was doing PhD under sahoo and he sent her a love proposal from his mobile, police confirmed.

The professor was booked under sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC and section 66 A of Information Technology Act.

Police said sahoo tried to defend himself by saying that the vulgar text messages were sent after his SIM card was lost but police said he was trying to mislead them by telling lies.
