Nation pays tribute to Rajiv Gandhi on his 69th birth anniversary

Bangalore, Aug 20: President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and several others visited Vir Bhumi and paid tributes to the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Several functions are being held across the country to remember the former prime minister and the day is also celebrated as Sadbhavan Diwas.

Rajiv Gandhi was the youngest prime minister of India and the sixth PM when he took the office at the age of 40 after his mother Indira Gandhi's assassination on Oct 31, 1984.

He was also assassinated by LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) while campaigning for the Congress candidate in Sriperambudur on 21 May 1991.

Rajiv Gandhi is also been awarded the highest civilian award by the Indian Government, Bharat Ratna in 1991.
