"Though the shadows of terrorism are haunting us today, but with commitment and resolve we will overcome this scourge," Sharif said in his speech during Pakistan's 67th Independence Day celebrations.

He said he was confident that with the cooperation of the Pakistan Army, security agencies and the nation, terrorism will be eliminated and Pakistan will be made a hub of peace and security, Xinhua reported.

The ceremony was attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, envoys of different countries, ministers and parliamentarians.

Referring to the presence of Ban at the Independence Day celebrations, Sharif said Pakistan has been an important component of the UN peace keeping missions and the presence of the UN chief was an acknowledgment of Pakistan's services.

"Pakistan has always stood by the charter of the UN and contributed to global peace. On the Independence Day, we renew pledge to continue our role in promoting global peace and security," the prime minister said.

He said Pakistan is faced with multiple challenges but "we, with the cooperation of the people will lay the foundation of a better future, the dream of which was seen by our forefathers".

"Pakistan is one of the most important powers of South Asia and the development of Gwadar port in Balochistan province and its communication infrastructure will usher in a new era of progress and prosperity in the region. This will make Pakistan the economic and political hub," Sharif said.
