Mumbai, Aug 4: Managing director of Singapore-based Vihari Jewels Vihari Poddar was arrested at the Chhatrapati International Airport here on Saturday for trying to smuggle jewellery worth Rs 2.3 crore.
Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DR) and the Directorate of Vigilance found diamond-studded gold jewellery in Vihari's luggage. She was allegedly carrying more jewellery in her underclothes.
Vihari, wife of textile tycoon Abhishek Poddar who is the director of Siyaram Silk Mills, later confessed that she had smuggled gold and diamond items during her frequent trips made in the last few months. The authorities subsequently raided two of her outlets in the Santacruz East and seized jewellery worth Rs 4 crore. The shops were also sealed.
In 2006, Vihari had opened a store in the Far East Shopping Centre on Orchard Road, a luxurious shopping enclave and tourist hub in Singapore.
Vihari collapsed in the courtroom minutes before the magistrate appeared and she was taken to a hospital. She has been sent to 14-days of judicial remand.
