Lucknow, Aug 1: With the south-west monsoon remaining normal in the state, moderate to rather heavy rainfall and thundershowers occurred at many places over the western Uttar Pradesh and few places over its eastern districts.

Met office here said that chief amount of rainfall recorded in cms are :-Mahroni, Kanpur-6 each, Baheri-5, Jhansi-4 each, Moth, Amroha and Lalitpur-3 each, Chatnag, Naraini, Orai, Muzaffarnagar and Puranpur-2 each.

The Met officials forecast that rain and thundershowers would occur at isolated places over the state. Meanwhile, a report from Sant Kabirnagar said that infuriated over erosion in an embankment on Ghaghra river, locals indulged in heavy brick-batting on senior officials who had gone there for inspection, forcing the police to resort to lathi-charge and use rubber bullets to control the mob.

On report of erosion in the embankment, District Magistrate Indravir Singh Yadav and other officials had gone to inspect it when the locals demanding immediate measures for checking it (erosion) started pelting stones damaging the window panes, police said.

Heavy security has been deployed on the embankment and measures to check the erosion were on, they said. According to Central Water Commission sources, river Ganga, which was flowing close to the red mark all along from Fatehgarh to Chatnag, was flowing above the danger mark at Gazipur and Ballia.

Yamuna has crossed the red mark at Kalpi, Hamirpur and Chilla Ghat (Banda) and Sharda continued to flow above the red mark at Palia Kalan. River Ghaghra has receded at Elgin Bridge and Ayodhya though it was still above the red mark at Turtipar, it added.
