The Congress-led UPA on Tuesday decided to divide Andhra Pradesh and create a new state of Telangana, bringing a five-decade-long struggle to a success. The new state will take at least six months to come into effect as an administrative unit.
The top leadership of the Congress, however, did not find the task of bifurcating the state easy. The party had serious differences within over the crucial decision while widespread protests broke out in the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema region after the decision was taken. Even call for separate states gained momentum in other parts of the country, leading to violence and destruction.
