The incident took place in Daraganj area of Allahabad. The locals thought that the elephant has gone berserk and so, they called wildlife officials to the spot.
According to a newspaper report, "VK Tarzan, the wildlife inspector for the Peoples for Animals (PFA), an animal welfare organisation, helped in bringing the tusker under control.
Tarzan said, "Had the animal gone mad it would have harmed others as well. When an elephant gets disturbed, it can easily harm 20-25 people and damage vehicles. But in this case it stopped after attacking the mahout."
A local said that the deceased owner of the elephant did not feed it well and would buy liquor after selling the elephant's food.
It also emerged that the mahout of the elephant did not had a valid license.
