The blast occurred at a time when the Assam Police are taking strict security measures to stop the ULFA(I) from carrying out potential strike in the city ahead of the Independence Day. What is more striking is that the terror act took place just a day after Assma Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi remarked that the outfit has lost much of its strength.
What happened on Sunday? According to eyewitnesses, two motor-cylce borne youths hurled a grenade towards a police team which was conducting a routine vigilance in the area. Guwahati police sources suspect the ULFA(I) behind the explosion and are carrying out preliminary investigation.
The injured, including two policemen, were admitted to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital. Hospital authorities said conditions of two are serious.
The injured also include three women basketball players from the neighbouring West Bengall who arrived here to participate in a tournament. Two from Nagaland were also injured.
Chief Minister Gogoi condemned the blast and asked the police to intensify the probe. The opposition AGP and BJP, meanwhile, slammed the Congress government for failing to ensure safety of the people.
