Malda (West Bengal), July 16: Union minister Abu Hashem Khan Chowdhury was shot at here on Tuesday while he was campaigning for the ongoing panchayat elections in the state.

The minister of state for health, who is also the district Congress president, was moving in a open jeep at a road show when he was targetted by one alleged to be a Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporter. Local news sources said that five rounds were fired at Chowdhury. He is reportedly safe.

A complaint has been lodged with Kaliachak police station in Malda. However, the police have been accused of taking no step.

State Congress president Pradip Bhattacharjee slammed the state government, accusing the latter of targetting its leaders while CPI(M) leader Mohammad Salim said he was feeling worried over the fact that a leader has been attacked in his own area.

Last month, the Congress alleged that the TMC was responsible for an explosion near the venue of its poll meeting here. Chowdhury said then that the ruling party was targetting it instead of the CPI(M) as its main enemy.
