Kolkata, July 6: The city police captured the headlines for the wrong reason once again after a 25-year-old man in the city was allegedly beaten up and then urinated on by policemen following a brawl with local goons on Thursday night. The youth, Md Rafiq, is undergoing treatment in hospital.

In an FIR filed after the incident, Rafiq's father Abdul Hamid said three goons stopped his son near Park Circus Maidan while he was on his way home around 10.15 pm. They asked for a matchbox and when Rafiq said he did not have one, they grabbed him to search his pockets.

Two policemen from Beniapukur police station, who were nearby, came forward to know what was the matter. Seeing them, the goons allowed Rafiq to run away but started shouting 'thief, thief' once he began to run. The policemen caught Rafiq, beat him up and then urinated on him on the insistence of the goons, the complaint said.

Senior police officers said such charges are grave and said if the two accused policemen were proved to be guilty, they would be punished.

However, police sources said that Rafiq told the investigators that he wasn't sure whether those who assaulted him were policemen.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is in charge of the police department.
