Mumbai, July 4: A Panvel-based politician, Sidharth Banthiya, was booked on Wednesday for allegedly cheating a Marathi actress by marrying her despite having a wife.

According to a report published in Mid-Day, the actress had approached the women's redressal cell of Mumbai Crime Branch recently and accused Banthiya of cheating her. She also alleged that the politician had duped her of Rs 6 lakh by promising her a government flat from the artistes' quota.

In her complaint, the actress said that Banthiya had produced fake divorce papers from his first wife and married her.

Police sources said that the actor had known Banthiya through a common friend here and the accused reportedly told her that he could grant her a government flat through his contacts in the state secretariat.

Banthiya soon started visiting her frequently and even went to her shooting locations and after time proposed to marry her. The two got married in July 23, 2010, police sources added.

But after a few months, the actor reportedly received a call from a woman who claimed to be Banthiya's wife. When she asked his husband about it, the latter admitted that he was a divorcee but he never wanted to reveal it for he did not want to lose her. He then showed the fake divorce paper and marriage certificate.

Banthiya, however, started threatening the actor saying she would not get work if she left him, said the report. The man had already taken ts 6 lakh from her for the flat.

A case was registered against Banthiya at Dattawadi police station under sections 376, 420, 467, 468, 494 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and the case has been handed over to the redressal cell for further probe.
