BJP won four seats out of a total of 14 seats in Assam in 2009, including Guwahati, Mangaldai, Silchar and Nagaon.

Though the party came second after the ruling Congress in the GMC polls, statistics show that the party's vote share have increased considerably compared to the last election of the corporation in 2003.

With several leaders of the Assam's regional political party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leaving the party, the BJP has opened its door for all such leaders, who are interested in joining the party.
