Fire tender rushed to the spot. All people have been evacuated from the building safely. The multi-floor Exchange Building at Ballard Pier caught fire in the early morning on Monday.
The building houses many government buildings and it is feared that crucial government documents might be ruined due to the large fire.
NDTV quoted one eyewitness as saying, "We could smell something burning. We shut down our devices, picked up our belongings and ran down. It (the fire) seems to be under control now. Operations have been going on for one-and-a-half hours."
Total eight fire tenders and ten water tankers have been trying to douse the fire. No one has been trapped in the building, said fire brigade sources.
