Mumbai, July 1: Suraj Pancholi has been granted bail on the surety of Rs 50,000 by the Bombay High Court on Monday, July 1. The aspiring actor earlier was denied bail by a session court in Mumbai.
Suraj was charged with abatement to suicide of Bollywood actor Jiah Khan. 22-year-old Suraj, son of Bollywood actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, had challenged a session court's order which had rejected his bail application. A magistrate court recently extended Suraj's judicial custody till July 11.
The Pancholis moved the high court following the lower court's order which had observed that the FIR and probe reports clearly suggested that Jiah was continuously subjected to ill-treatment by the accused.
In a six-page letter allegedly written by Jiah, she had allegedly spoken of torture and abortion. The police were using the letter as a dying declaration to charge Suraj who was charged with abetting the suicide.
But his lawyers countered that the letter did not mention about the date of the abuse and did not make any mention that Suraj was responsible for the crime. They also claimed that the handwriting in the letter and Jiah's signature were different.
25-year-old Jiah was found dead in her Juhu residence in Mumbai on June 3. Her mother and sister were not present at the flat. Postmortem report said the young actress died due to hanging.
