MBBS student gang-raped in Manipal University campus

Manipal, June 22: A 22-year-old student of medicine was allegedly abducted from near her college in Manipal and gangraped by three men on Thursday night, police said.

The incident occured when the victim, fourth year MBBS student, was walking to her apartment from the university library. Three persons, including an auto driver, dragged her into an autorickshaw, took her to a isolated place and raped her. The miscreants later dropped her back and fled the scene. She managed to reach her apartment with difficulty. Her roommates immediately took her to Kasturba Medical college Hospital.

Police registered a case of kidnapping and gangrape based on the complaint of an estate manager at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education.

"There has been an incident of gangrape. The police are verifying the complaint. There are certain clues that we are working on. No arrests have been made. It is a delicate situation because the victim is in a state of shock," said Prathap Reddy, IG of Police, Western Range, in whose jurisdiction the educational district of Udupi lies.

The student, who is from Kerala, is in shock, but has provided information on the alleged rape through counsellors at the hospital where she is admitted.

"We are trying to rebuild the picture of what transpired through counsellors who alone can interact with her. We have to progress carefully because she is in a state of trauma," Reddy said.
