Chennai, June 21: After the success of  'Amma' Canteens serving breakfast and lunch at subsidsed price, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa launched yet another pro-poor scheme, Farm Fresh Consumer Outlets across the city.

Jayalalithaa launched 31 such outlets, which will sell vegetables at subsidised rates, through video conferencing from the Secretariat, to give relief from soaring vegetable prices.

State-run TUCS would operate the outlets. Noting that vegetables would be sourced from purchase centres/cooperative societies directly, an official release said payment would be made available to farmers avoiding middlemen.

"Since vegetables are purchased from the farmers on the same day itself, people will have the benefit on purchasing them at subsidised rates".

Tamil Nadu has emerged to be India's freebies kingdom, from free colour television, mixer grinder, fan and laptops.

Lok Sabha elections are due next year and the ruling AIADMK is facing public wrath on power shortage and price rise.Clearly it appears to be populism and less economics before elections.

But well informed people ask, is the government doing enough to raise the income of the poor so that they could take care of themselves.
