Why court rejected Ankeet Chavan's bail plea for marriage

New Delhi, May 29: Delhi court on Tuesday, May 28 rejected bail plea of arrested cricketer Ankeet Chavan who had applied for bail on the ground of scheduled marriage on June 2. While rejecting his bail plea, the court, however, clarified its stand over its decision.

The court said, "The defence counsel has cited reason of social stigma to the families of the bride and groom. Social sentiments cannot be considered as a valid ground while evaluating the grounds of bail."

Asking Chavan's lawyer to postpone the marriage, the court said, "Keeping in view the gravity of offence and conspiracy with other co-accused persons, I do not find any ground to admit accused either on regular or on interim bail. Both the applications are accordingly dismissed."

Kishore Gayakwad, Chavan's lawyer, earlier had told, "Chavan's marriage has already been fixed and it is on June 2, so he be granted bail."

Chavan has been sent to judicial custody till June 4. His other teammates of Rajasthan Royals -- S Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila too were sent to judicial custody.

The cricketers have been accused of accepting money upto Rs 60 lakh for giving away pre-determined number of runs in an over during IPL matches.

Investigation in fixing scandal is getting murkier day by day. It was learnt that cricketers were lure with money, expensive gifts and women.

Recently, a CCTV footage was aired on TV new channels showing Sreesanth, Chavan along with one prime bookie Jiju Janardhan. The two players also were seen with different women at different times. The footage was collected from a hotel in Chandigarh where Rajasthan Royals team had stayed during their IPL match.
