Raipur, May 28: Three days after the gruesome attack on a Congress convoy, Naxals finally claimed responsibilities revealing reasons behind killing senior party leaders in Chhattisgarh. The ultras on Tuesday, May 28 sent a four-page note and an audio clipping to several media organisations and put an end to all speculations regarding the attack.

Congress leaders Mahendra Karma, Nand Kumar Patel and VC Shukla -- the trio were the prime targets of their attack, claimed Maoists spokesperson. He also stated that People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) had carried out the attack which killed 27 people, including 11 Congress leader and injured 32 others.

One of the reasons behind targeting Nand Kumar Patel was Green Hunt Operations. The Maoists were upset with Patel who during his tenure as state Home Minister approved Operation Green Hunt and also allowed Central Forces in anti-Naxals operations.

In the note, the ultras also enlisted the "misdeeds" of Mahendra Karma and explained the reasons behind their decision to "punish" the leader. Maoists also claimed that the act was a revenge for the "atrocities done by the Salwa Judum".

The ultras also expressed their disappointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, BJP President Rajnath Singh and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh. The Maoists in their letter slammed the leaders for not speaking out 'when innocent people were killed by the state'.

The PM, Sonia and other leaders had termed the May 25 incident an attack on democracy which enraged the Naxals. The ultras also put forward few demands such as -- an end to Operation Green Hunt, withdrawal of paramilitary forces from Dandakaranya, unconditional freedom of revolutionaries and "innocent" tribals who have been confined in jails.

At least 250 Maoists had attacked the Congress convoy when the leaders were returning from party's Parivartan rally in Sukma on Saturday, May 25. Karma and Patel were killed when the heavily-armed Maoists ambushed the convoy. Shukla, who was injured critically, is being treated in a hospital in Gurgaon.

The Maoists, however, expressed grief for killing "innocent" Congress workers and security personnel.
