New Delhi, May 24: Even while Mulayam Singh Yadav skipped UPA dinner, his son Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh, staying above politics, managed to temporarily fix the breach in upper Ganga canal and restore water supply to Delhi.

The repairs to the main canal are expected to take several months, but the UP Irrigation department yesterday built a coffer dam to restore supply.

With this water supply will ease in various areas of East and South Delhi. For the UPA, water issue would have been embarrassing as it celebrated nine years in power at Centre. Water issue is also crucial for Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit as she looks for record fourth term this November.

According to superintendent engineer in irrigation department, V Singh Bhadoria, "470 cusecs of water supply per day to Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi treatment plants in Delhi has been restored from yesterday, as the repairing of the breach has been completed."

Various areas in East and South Delhi were facing severe water shortage after Uttar Pradesh cut raw water supply to the two plants in Delhi from the upper Ganga canal to fix the breach at Khatoli on May 17.

The upper Ganga canal supplies around 450 cusecs of water to Delhi out of which 200 cusecs is supplied to the Bhagirathi plant and 250 cusecs goes to Sonia Vihar plant.
