New Delhi, May 10: The national capital once again found itself in the headlines for the wrong reasons after a Class XII student was shot in Munirka area in broad daylight around 11 am on Friday. She was shot by an unidentified gunman, sources said. She succumbed to her injuries at Safdarjung Hospital later.

It was said that the assailant barged into the victim's residence and shot her. Her father said that the culprit was known to the family. He alleged that he used to disturb his daughter and wanted to marry her. He allegedly threatened to kill the girl and then himself as well. The victim's aunt, who was in the house at the moment, tried to chase the criminal but he fled.

New Delhi has been at the centre of news for its non-stop stories of violence against women. Last December, a 23-year-old woman was brutally gangraped and assaulted in a moving bus late in the night, sparking off a massive uproar across the nation. The woman later died in a hospital in Singapore.

Recently, a five-year-old girl was kidnapped by some neighbours and raped in confinement. The police allegedly wanted to hush up the case by offering bribes to the victim's family.
