Sarabjit Singh cremated; Rahul Gandhi sheds tears

Amritsar, May 3: As it was reported earlier, Sarabjit Singh has been cremated with state honours. His last rites were performed at his ancestral home in Bhikhiwind, Punjab on Friday, May 3.

A huge crowd gathered to bid adieu to the martyr who had struggled in a jail in Pakistan for last 22 years. Aam-aadmi (common man) to politicians -- all arrived at the venue. Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi too attended the funeral.

Rahul was accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. Earlier on Thursday, Rahul had met Sarabjit's relatives.

According to sources, the young Gandhi family scion got very emotional during his one hour meeting with the the distraught family of the Indian prisoner who died in Pakistan succumbing to his fatal injuries. 49-year-old Sarabjit was attacked by his fellow inmates inside a highly secured cell in a jail in Lahore.

The state government had announced a financial assistance of Rs 1 crore to Sarabjit's family members. The Central Government also announced ex-gratia payment of Rs 25 lakh for Sarabjit's family from Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

Both daughters of the deceased also would get government jobs. The announcement was made by Sukhbir Singh Badal.
