Why delay in action in minor rape case? SC seeks explanation
A five-year-old girl was kidnapped and brutally gangraped by two men from Bihar earlier this month. Both were apprehended from their native place.
The brutal rape outraged the entire nation with serious demand raised for the ouster of Kumar after the Delhi Police had come under heavy criticism for handling the case with apathy. The family of the victim had accused the police of offering bribe to keep their mouths shut and not take legal course against the culprits.
A police officer was also accused of slapping a woman activist while she was protesting in front of the hospital where the victim was being treated. The policeman was suspended later.
The police commissioner was also criticized for turning up before the media after much delay and failing to improve the law and order situation in Delhi even in the wake of the shocking Nirbhaya gangrape case of December 16 last year. Kumar refused to resign, saying he was not responsible for the failure of his force.
